Alan Baker

Good review, Clive. You say it's 'not a big, hectoring Poetry Voice, neither is it wise-cracking or wistful'. It's hard to categorise Riley's style. The quietness belies the complexity and layering of the text (evident in the untitled final section you quote). A lot of his poetry does read like notebook entries, unfinished or undetermined, and this book sounds like a logical extension of that process.

There's a planned symposium on Riley at http://intercapillaryspace.blogspot.com/
