I could tell you tales of dirty deeds and broken hearts or moments of altruism that left me with nothing but a smile.
There was the time I gave a wandering Renegade my last pair of trousers, my juggling balls and a crash course in smiling to change his life from beggar to busker.
Or the drunkenly stolen car that I parked on the steps of a police station (to try and appease my guilt...)
Pointless vandalism and petty crime, drugs, women and large fruity cocktails. I've had a great life...
But I believe that the definition of an act is the motive behind it. So all the exciting moments in my life from my teens through my twenties were all self absorbed and on the whole completely lacking in awareness of any emotional turbulence in my wake.
My whole life has been a selfish act up until the moment I didn't know I was waiting for. The moment I held my new born son in my arms.
Then everything changed. Purpose, perspective, love, life and living. All redefined. In an instant I was aware of all the heartache that I'd given my parents, friends and lovers and how utterly self absorbed my life had been.
I'm not saying I had an epiphany and set aside my sinful ways to become a Von Trapp yodelling my way to the podium of the 'Dad of the year' awards but I think that being a good parent is in itself the most selfless thing you can hope to achieve. I'm practising hard and one day, hopefully, I'll get the hang of it...
I was a brilliant Dad - ask anyone [except my children, of course][ooo-and Auntie Fiona]

Cheers Neil. Nope - but I'm sure they will now...

Being a parent is hard but rewarding indeed and you only look like Charlie on a very low resolution, if you squint really hard. Although you do seem to have a similar past regarding theft, drugs and vandalism. Perhaps it's an aura thing
